Process for Appointment of District Associate Judges
The process begins when a district associate judge submits a retirement letter to the chief judge in the district. The death of a district associate judge also begins the process. The process timeline can change if the chief justice delays the appointment due to budget cuts.
The commission chair publishes a notice of the vacancy in the official county newspaper and the commission accepts applications for a minimum of 15 days. After the notification period, but within 30 days after notice of the vacancy, the commission interviews the applicants and selects three nominees to send to the chief judge of the district.
The district judges in the judicial election district then have 15 days to select one nominee, by majority vote, to fill the vacancy.
